Secrets to Hide Wood Paneling

Do you have a home with wood paneling? Do you Love it or Hate It? Would you like to save yourself time and money and just hide it, without installing sheet rock over it, or without removing it and installing sheet rock where it was? I have 2 Steps to Hide Wood Paneling.

When we look at foreclosures, a lot of them are very outdated.  Therefore, we see a lot of wood paneling.  Unfortunately, I despise it, and it’s One of the first things that needs to go. However, replacing wood paneling, can be a HUGE undertaking.  First you have to remove it, then you have to replace it with sheet rock.  Installing sheet rock is very time consuming and labor intensive.  Therefore, my husband came up with 2 Steps to Hide Your Wood Paneling.  He has a quick and easy tool to do ALL of the work.  This tool is a huge time and money saver.  I am so glad we figured out this Huge Secret!

2 Steps to Hide Wood Paneling

  1. Use a texture sprayer with mud compound and spray an orange peel look.
  2. Use mud compound and a drywall knife to fill in the grooves on the wood paneling.

SUPPLIES:

1. Plastic sheeting
2. Painter’s Tape
3. Drywall compound
4. 100-grit sandpaper
5. 10 gallon bucket
6. Drywall knife
7. Compound mudding tray

TOOLS:

1. Texture sprayer
2. Drill with mixing paddle attachment
3. Drywall hopper
4. Air Compressor

PREP:

Paint your wall with an oil based primer, so the moisture from the wood, doesn’t seep into your walls.

TUTORIAL:

You will need a Texture Gun from Harbor Freight, that cost $30, an Air Texture Air Gun Spray Nozzle, that we attached to our Air Compressor.  If you do NOT have an air compressor, (I recommend you get one, you will need it for many other things, such as a nail gun) then you can buy the Wagner Tex Texture  Sprayer for $80 on Amazon.

BEFORE

When we first walked into our second foreclosure, we saw the Ugly Wood Paneling. The walls were brown ( as you can see at the bottom) but the former owners painted white over the brown wood paneling.  They actually saved us a step, because it was already primed.  We decided that we didn’t want the outdated 70’s look of wood paneling, but we weren’t about to take out all of the paneling and install sheet rock.  So we textured over them.  There are Two Types of Texturing: Smooth or Orange Peel Look.

In closing, you can save a lot of time and money by using mud compound with a drywall knife OR mud compound with a texture sprayer to hide wood paneling.  If you want a smooth sheet rock look, you will need to use mud compound and a drywall knife and evenly apply the mud into the grooves of the wood paneling.  This process takes  A LOT of time, smoothing, and sanding.  If you want an orange peel look, which has a light texture on the wall, then you use mud compound with texture sprayer attached to an air compressor.  This process is a Quick process, that takes a steady hand, but gets the job done a lot quicker.  Which process do you like? Which look do you prefer?
