Create an Office Nook Under the Stairs

Whether you live in a small space or need some extra square footage, finding a place in your home that isn’t being used to it’s fullest potential, is definitely something to remedy.  Everybody needs an office space, no matter the size.  Here is a tutorial on finding an office space, in the place you may least expect… under your stairs.  There are lots of pictures on Pinterest that show office nook under the stairs, but I haven’t found one, that actually showed me the step by step tutorial.  Here I will show You how to Create an Office Nook Under the Stairs, with lots of pictures.

Welcome! I am so excited to share with you How to Build Office Nook under Stairs.  I saw this idea on Pinterest several years ago and really wanted to build an office nook under our stairs.  We have a one story home with a finished basement.  Our basement was originally our TV and Media room (when we had 2 children).  However, when our family grew from 4 to 6, we had to create some rooms in our basement.  This was the perfect time to build an office nook under the stairs.

Supplies:

  1. sheet rock
  2. mud aka compound
  3. electrical box
  4. desk light
  5. kitchen countertop
  6. vinyl laminate flooring
  7. tape

Tools:

  1. air compressor
  2. texture gun
  3. crow bar to remove sheet rock
  4. screws
  5. level
  6. measuring tape
  7. electric screw driver
  8. nail gun
  9. concrete compressor

Here is the wall with the stairs on the other side.  The white door is a long closet to that goes under the stairs to the left of the closet door.  Since, the stairs are sloped the closet under the stairs is also sloped.  It’s impossible to have organized storage inside the closet because of the sloped stairs.  I was happy to rip out the wall and build office nook under stairs with a smaller closet.

First, open the wall, by removing the sheet rock.

Second, add 2 x 4 ‘s to existing frame.  Adding a frame will allow you to have an even surface to add your sheet rock.  Add new closet wall (right side of office nook).

Third, add an electrical box for a desk light and electrical outlet.

Fourth, screw in sheet rock to wooden frame.  Texture the wall and paint it.  We used our texture sprayer with air gun to add an orange peel texture.  Spray texture is quicker than texturing by hand.

Fifth, install flooring. We used vinyl laminate, with the tongue and groove click engineering.  After installing the vinyl laminate, I painted and cut baseboards for the new office nook.

Sixth, add a laminate kitchen countertop with L brackets.

Seventh, we also added cabinets underneath the countertop, but I forgot to take a picture.

Eighth, and we added floating shelves on the right wall, with a magnet board, calendar, and white board above the new “desk.”

Of course, we could have found a longer countertop.  However, this one was a salvaged piece, so we decided to use it.  Hey, nothing like a bargain. Then we added Tupperware drawers, with wheels on the left side of this countertop to fill in the space and add extra storage.

If you are short on space for an office, consider an office nook, that provides a counter, drawers, shelves, and storage.  If you have stairs that are not being used for storage and is just a waste of space, then you are in luck for a new office nook.  Our office nook is perfect in the basement for our tween daughter to do her homework and crafts.
