Top 10 Improvements for a Bathroom Makeover

Do you have a bathroom that is in desperate need of a makeover? Clueless about the steps on how to do it, or what to do? Do you have an outdated bathroom with green, pink, or blue tile from the 70’s? Tired of having only one sink? This post will show you the Top 10 Improvements for a Bathroom Makeover, and how we transformed our bathroom under $1000 dollars.

Today, I invite you into my hallway bathroom in our fourth home (2nd foreclosure).  When we saw this bathroom, we knew it had to be fixed up.  It had Olive Green Tile EVERYWHERE, the walls, counters, flooring, and shower.  We knew we had to give this bathroom a Makeover.  It did Not need a Complete Makeover, because the layout, flooring, and shower, and toilet were in good condition.  However, the vanity and tile color HAD to be ELIMINATED ASAP!!  We wanted to make the most of the space and install a double vanity bathroom on a budget.  We knew our four children would be sharing this bathroom and a double vanity was a KEY item to make this bathroom Functional and Decrease traffic jams.

Here is my list of Top 10 Improvements for a Bathroom Makeover

Big Items

  1. Painting Tile and Walls.  Everyone knows painting is the quickest, easiest, and most affordable way to transform any room.  When you are painting a room (with high moisture and water) use high gloss paint.
  2. Replace the single vanity with a double vanity.  Check out our Single Vanity Tutorial Here.  If you have the room, then replacing a single vanity with a double vanity, is a #1 Improvement.  More sinks and counter space is Always a Necessity.
  3. Install new Faucets.  Since, you are installing a double vanity, you will need a new faucet. Therefore, take the time to replace the outdated faucet, with new faucets.
  4. Install Lighting. You have a choice, whether you want One Wide Light in the Center of the two sinks or 2 small Lights Over Each Sink.
  5. Replace Mirror.  Again, this is your preference. Do you want One Wide Mirror, or Two Smaller Mirrors, over Each Sink? If you choose to Keep One Wide Mirror, then make sure you frame it with Trim.  It will look more professional and Custom.
  6. Install a New Toilet. Since you are replacing everything else, it is best to install a new toilet.  Toilets have improved in style, functionality, and water conservation.  Plus the inside Plumbings of a toilet, get old and will need to be replaced, if you have an old Toilet.  Having a new toilet, is Just Sanitary as well, especially if you are Not the First Owner.

Small Items

  1. Install Window Treatments. You will need privacy, and a way to decrease or increase the sun shining through your bathroom.  Plus window treatments, add Beauty and a cohesive look to your Bathroom Makeover.
  2. Add Decor.  Even Bathrooms can have Decor.  You still want this room to look inviting.  After all you are spending a lot of time in it.  So decide on a theme and pick out some cute decor to hang on your walls.  Have your shower curtain and towels, coordinate with your decor.  For example, if you are picking a beach theme, then have blue or white towels and a shower curtain with seashells.
  3. Add Storage. Everyone seems to forget about Storage in a Bathroom.  Storage can be found under the sink, in the vanity drawers, shelves on the wall, or in the linen closet,  There are a lot of wall storage ideas on Pinterest. For example, floating shelves and Pallet Shelves.
  4. Buy Accessories and Linens. For the final piece you will need to dress up your bathroom, with Accessories and Linens.  Accessories include, toothbrush holders, soap dispensers, cups, garbage can, etc. Linens include, towels, rugs, and shower curtains. Make them coordinate with your wall color and decor.
