This picture is from 2002.  We had just bought our first home in Southern California.  We didn’t know a lot about painting, and wanted to find a way to add color to our home.  However, we had one problem.  We had 12 foot ceilings in our Living Room and could not paint all the way to the top of the ceiling, without scaffolding.  Therefore, we decided to paint about 7 feet up the wall.  We wanted it to look like we were going to Paint an Accent Wall with High Ceilings.  However, we chose this height because it was higher than the windows and it was the average height of the rest of our rooms, that did not have an “open to below” concept.  The 7 foot height was much more obtainable than the 12 foot height.  When choosing a color for an accent wall, it usually has a “Pop” of color to it.  Therefore, the color is seldom a neutral color.  In our case we chose Burgundy.  It was a good contrast to our beige carpet and paint on the rest of our walls.  Plus it tied in well with our Southern California Theme.

First, we had to get a ladder and a level and mark 7 feet all the way around the 3 walls of our living room.  This went a lot quicker than we imagined.

Second, we had to add Painters Tape to the top of our pencil line, in case we accidentally painted over the line.

Third, Once the Prep work was finished we covered the carpet with plastic and began to paint.

Fourth, we had two different paint colors, and decided to paint the accent wall first to see if we really liked it.  Once we painted the beige paint it helped tone down the burgundy and we decided to keep it.
